What is the best grass seed for your area?
I never realized how little I knew about grass seed. A friend of mine owns a turfgrass company and I'm trying to help him sell some grass seed. Normally you would think this wasn't a big deal, after all, it's just grass seed, right? Do you have any idea at all how many different types of grass seeds there are?
I counted about 15 different kinds of grass seed in just a few minutes. I quickly realized that I might be in a little bit over my head. The first problem is that most of the bags are just labeled something like lawn mix, or pro-athletic field mix. The first thing I had to do was to figure out what those mixtures are comprised of. I only became more confused when I did that, as these mixtures contain grass seeds that I've never heard of.
I did figure out that when you're thinking of using grass seed you should probably use a mixture of seeds. One of the biggest reasons is that if your lawn gets attacked by a disease, the disease generally invades just one kind of grass, so it's likely that your lawn will still look pretty good even in the event of a disease.
I do know that Kentucky bluegrass is pretty popular. It's pretty easy to take care of it, it grows good in the colder states and the type of grass it produces is a dense, fine textured sod like grass that does very well with lots of water. It spreads quickly and can give you nice lawn for many years to come.
Another type of grass I learned about is called fescue grass. This kind of grass you shade tolerant in very rarely will suffer from disease or insect infestation. If you use a fescue with the Kentucky bluegrass you have a very nice, healthy looking lawn, and it will help to stop weeds from entering into the grass. If your lawn is tired looking or worn-out then over seeding with a mixture of fescue and the bluegrass may be just what your lawn needs. Late fall or early spring is the best time to improve a tired looking lawn.
Then I learned about Bermuda type seed. I learned it's one of the toughest seeds out there and drought tolerant. It works really well if you have a high-traffic areas such as a play area. Bermuda grass seed spreads very quickly and can sometimes get into areas of your lawn where does not want. It does very well in hot weather and does not need a lot of watering. One thing to keep in mind with Bermuda grass though is that it will produce a very thick batch and can make and this can make mowing difficult.
I still know very little about grass seed compared to most people in the grass seed industry, however, I am learning and will continue to read about grass seed. If you would like to see the different types of grass seeds available for purchase in 50 pound bags, simply go to this grass seed area of the website.
Any comments anyone can make about the types of grass they like, or the best mixtures they've used, would be most welcomed.
